A woman who was on a ventilator and in a coma for weeks after getting COVID-19 hadn’t responded to doctors’ efforts to wake her, and so her family made the difficult decision to take her off of life support.

However, on the day they planned to remove her from life support, Bettina Lerman woke up!

According to Lerman’s son, she is a “miracle.”  He also said his mother who turns 70 in February, had a number of health conditions, including diabetes, and had a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery a couple of years ago.

She started showing Covid-19 symptoms in early September, was diagnosed when she went into the hospital September 12 and went on the ventilator on the 21st, he said.

She was not vaccinated but had been planning to get her shots when she got sick, he said.

Her condition deteriorated and doctors told the family she wasn’t expected to recover.

It’s been about three weeks since she woke up on October 29, and a hospital spokeswoman told CNN she’s in serious condition. The hospital could not release any additional information because of privacy laws.

More than 768,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the United States since the start of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 58.9% of the US population is fully vaccinated.
