
Juneteenth may have been yesterday but the public holiday is observed today. It’s first federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day.
That’s the executive director and co-founder of Juneteenth for Palm Beach County, Sukeenah Kelly, and because June 19th was a Sunday, the new holiday is observed today.
Juneteenth is the newest federal holiday but it’s not universally observed in corporate America.
Florida recognizes Juneteenth as a holiday…but not as a paid holiday.
Many offices will be closed including banks, the U.S. Post Office, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Inc., non essential federal, state and local government offices and some corporations including Nike, Target, Best Buy and Twitter.
