A man who attempted to break into the home of a West Palm Beach couple was shot and killed by one of the homeowners in the early morning hours of Saturday police say.

The couple were awakened just after 4:00 AM when a burglar entered their home in the 500 block of Avon Road through their bedroom window and turned on a light.

A brief confrontation ensued and the intruder was shot by one of the residents.

He later died at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

The names of the homeowners are being withheld under Marsy’s Law, a Florida law that allows victims to remain anonymous if they fear their safety is at risk.

Police say the couple did not know the intruder.

The investigation continues.
