Biden Wins Florida; Boca Mayor, WPB Commissioners Reelected

TUESDAY 11 P.M. UPDATE:

Former Vice President Joe Biden claimed an early victory in Florida on Tuesday evening, sliding past Senator Bernie Sanders with 62 to 23 percent of the vote, in the Democratic presidential primary. He ended the night by winning Illinois and Arizona as well, making it a clean sweep.

With Tuesday’s wins, Biden’s delegate count increases to 1,147, while Sanders has secured 861. The candidate who reaches 1,991 delegates first will receive the Democratic nomination.

Meanwhile, voters in two of Palm Beach County’s largest cities decided to stay the course.

In the West Palm Beach Commission District 1 race, they reelected incumbent Kelly Shoaf with 74 percent of the vote to Martina Tate Walker’s 26 percent. For District 5, Christina Lambert defeated challenger Stephen Sylvester, 66 to 34 percent, to retain her seat.

Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer was reelected with 89 percent of the vote against real estate broker Bernard Korn.

In addition to the Democratic presidential primary being held in Florida, Arizona, and Illinois, big races are being decided in two local cities Tuesday.

Those include the race for mayor of Boca Raton, where incumbent Scott Singer is looking to hold on to the seat against real estate broker Bernard Korn.

As far as West Palm Beach, two commission seats are up for grabs.

In District 1, the city’s North End, real estate executive Kelly Shoaf faces her second challenge from pastor Martina Tate Walker, who ran unsuccessfully against Shoaf in 2018.

For District 5 (the city’s South End), Christina Lambert, who is serving a rotation as the commission’s president, faces physical therapist Stephen Sylvester.

In addition, Delray Beach residents are voting for two city commissioners among seven candidates. They include:

Seat 2 – Bill Bathurst, Juli Casale, Jennifer Jones, Debra Tendrich

Seat 4 – Angela Burns, Chris Davey, Shirley E. Johnson

Anyone may vote at the main election office on Southern and Military Trail, North County Courthouse in Palm Beach Gardens, the Southeast Palm Beach County Administration Complex in Delray Beach, and the county office building in Belle Glade.

Earlier in the day, voters reported problems at the following locations:

-Sunlight Community Church

-Lakes of Delray Clubhouse

-Journey Church

-Pompey Park
