The Florida Department of Health is reporting that at least one person in Palm Beach County has acquired the West Nile Virus.

No other information regarding the person was given other than that the virus was acquired locally.

The mosquito-born virus has not been reported in the area since 2018, however, there have been several cases of the virus reported in Miami as recent as June.

Authorities believe the uptick in cases is due to the increased rain fall which is creating more areas of standing water.

The health department is advising people to dump standing water where it has collected and discarding old tires, cans, broken flower pots, that may collect water.

They also suggest wearing items that cover your skin and or mosquito repellent when outdoors.

For children under the age of two-months, mosquito netting is suggested.
