The Beijing Winter Olympic opening ceremonies are getting underway Friday morning. Beijing is the first city to host both the summer and winter Olympics.

NBC is on with live coverage but the celebration will air again tonight in primetime. Nearly three-thousand athletes from 91 nations are competing in 109 medal events.
But not a lot of government officials won’t be watching them in person. The U.S. is one of several countries imposing diplomatic boycotts in protest of China’s alleged human rights abuses.
The White House is cheering on Team USA though, lighting up in red, white and blue last night.
The U-S sent no diplomatic delegation to China, but Russia did. President Vladimir Putin himself.
