Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of an unfortunate decision to blow up a 45-foot eight ton whale dead on an Oregon beach.
Officials said the rotting whale was too big to move and it could not be burned, so they decided to blow it up.
On November 12th, 1970, officials rigged the giant corpse with dynamite and invited the public and news media to watch the explosion.
The explosion sent bits of blubber into the air and scattered the whale across several miles. Video of the news coverage has been seen over 350-million times in recent years.
