Athol Island– Authorities have called off the search for an 18-year-old high school baseball player who reportedly jumped off of a cruise ship in the Bahamas.
The incident occurred Wednesday around 11:30 p.m.
18-year-old Cameron Robbins was last seen swimming in the water near the uninhabited Athol Island in the Bahamas.
According to the report, the teen had just graduated high school in Louisiana and was celebrating with peers aboard the Blackbeard Revenge sunset cruise ship, when he allegedly took a dare to jump off of the ship.
Video of the scene shows Robbins swimming in the water as the ship goes into hysterics.
At least one person threw out a life preserver but Robbins swam in the other direction before disappearing.
Both Bahamian authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for Robbins for several days before calling off the search on Friday.
“We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends,” the Coast Guard said.
The family has also released a statement:
“The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge. We want to thank the Bahamas government, the U.S. Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us. In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends, and well-wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss.”
