FORT MYERS, FL–
A Florida mother who was convicted of starving her toddler to death due to diet restrictions has been sentenced to life behind bars.
38-year-old Sheila O’Leary was sentenced on Monday after being convicted on six charges related to the death of her 18-month-old son in 2019.
Despite being 18- month-old, the child only weighed 17 pounds and was the size of a 7-month-old at the time of his death.
Authorities say the family followed a strict vegan diet of consuming only raw fruits and vegetables, though the toddler was also fed breast milk.
The couple had two other children who also were malnourished according to investigations.
A fourth child was returned to her biological father during another malnutrition case in Virginia.
Shelia has been sentenced for first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse, and two counts of child neglect.
Her husband Ryan Patrick O’Leary is currently awaiting trial for the same charges.
