Florida– Two 12-year-old boys are now in police custody after authorities say they were caught playing with a loaded gun.
The incident occurred in Oak Hill, Florida on Monday.
Authorities say they received a call from a witness who reported seeing a child pointing what appeared to be a gun at their vehicle on U.S. 1 in Oak Hill.
“The little kid was standing out in the field and it appeared he had a handgun and he was pointing at our car as we were driving by,” the caller said.
A responding officer reported that when she arrived in the area, she saw one of the children in the field shooting the gun.
“Thank God they threw the gun down and didn’t want to challenge the sergeant. She did a great job. She was firm. She did what she had to do,” Chitwood said.
Investigators located four spent rounds and the loaded gun.
Both children were taken into custody.
One boy was charged with a felony, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The other is charged with a misdemeanor–unlawful possession of a firearm for someone under the age of 18.
Neither of the children were said to have had a criminal record.
Authorities are now investigating where the gun came from.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out. Right now we’re not getting any answers. They’re coming off and saying they got it from a 10-year-old. We’re trying to track it down,” Chitwood said.
The mother of one of the children told authorities that she owns a gun but her gun was accounted for in the home.
Officials also reported that the gun has not been reported stolen.
According to the report, the owner of the gun, if located, may face charges.
