Gainesville, Florida – A 66-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man have died after their Telsa crashed into the back of a Walmart semi-truck as they were pulling into a rest stop.
The incident occurred just before 2:00 p.m. near the Paynes Prairie Rest Area along Interstate 75.
“(The Tesla) came off the exit ramp to the rest area, continued south for a short period, and turned into an easterly direction and that’s at what time we had the collision where the Tesla struck the rear of the tractor-trailer,” A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson told WCJB.
The vehicle then became trapped under the semi. Photos from the scene appear to show the driver’s seat and the front passenger seat crushed under the back of the semi.
Gainesville Fire Rescue helped pull both of the victims out of the vehicle and pronounced them dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
