DAYTONA BEACH, FL– A child under the age of two, has safely been returned to her family after she was accidentally left in a rental car at a Florida airport.
The incident occurred Monday evening in the Hertz rental car return area at the Daytona Beach International Airport.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported that the child’s grandfather was babysitting her when he forgot the child in the back of the rental.
An employee for Hertz noticed the child about 45 minutes after the grandfather returned the car and called the police.
Authorities reported that the child was not injured:
“The child was scared and hot, but thankfully in good health when checked by paramedics,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Deputies arrived to find the employee carrying the child, whose face was warm and streaked with dried tears, but was breathing normally.”
As authorities were investigating the incident, the child’s mother called to say that her father accidentally left the child and that she was on her way to pick her up.
The grandfather “was remorseful and cooperative with deputies.”
He has since been charged with one count of child neglect.
