UPDATE:

Golf legend and Jupiter Island resident, Tiger Woods, underwent lengthy emergency surgery following his one-vehicle rollover crash required the insertion of a rod, screws and pins to stabilize his leg, according to a statement on his Twitter account.

Orthopedic trauma specialists inserted a rod into his tibia to stabilize both the tibia and fibula bones, stabilized the foot and ankle bones with a combination of screws and pins and relieved pressure to the muscle and soft-tissue of his leg by surgically releasing the covering of the muscle, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anish Mahajan said in the statement.

Having seen the damage at the crash site, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said it was “nothing short of a miracle” that Woods was alive. He was probably saved by his seatbelt.

The 45-year-old, 15-time major champion had to be pulled from the wreckage of his Genesis GV80 SUV after it left the roadway at a high rate of speed. Tiger was rushed to nearby UCLA trauma center where he underwent surgery on his right leg and ankle and is said to be in stable condition this morning.

Investigators say Woods was the only person in the vehicle when it left the roadway, flipping several times yesterday. No other vehicles were involved and authorities say the golfing great showed no signs of impairment. It’s expected that the investigation into the accident could take weeks.

ORIGINAL STORY:
Golf legend and Jupiter resident, Tiger Woods, has been injured in a single vehicle rollover crash in Los Angeles.

The incident was reported Tuesday afternoon near the Rolling Hills Estate and Rancho Palos Verdes. The crash happened shortly after 7:00 a.m. PST.

“The vehicle was traveling northbound on Hawthorne Blvd, at Blackhorse Rd when it crashed and rolled 500 feet into a ditch. The vehicle sustained major damage,” authorities in Los Angeles said.

Woods, 45, was alone in the courtesy SUV when it hit the center median and a sign before flipping. Fire rescue used an axe to remove the windshield to free him from the vehicle. He was reportedly conscious and alert during the extrication.

Paramedics used splints and a backboard to stabilize Woods and he was immediately transported to UCLA Trauma Center in serious condition.

Woods underwent surgery to repair compound leg fractures and a shattered ankle, according to his agent.

Woods, a 15-time major champion was also recovering from a recent fifth back surgery.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s department says, pending toxicology results, they do not believe alcohol or other substances were involved and Woods showed no impairment. The sheriff’s department did say speed may have been a factor.

Just yesterday, Tiger was playing golf with Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade.
