
ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL– Authorities are investigating a shooting that took the life of a 16-year-old boy while he was getting mail outside of his grandmother’s home.
The shooting occurred Monday in the 2600 block of Juanita Avenue, west of Northwest 25th Street around 1:45 p.m.
“He was going out peacefully to get his mail. Someone fired multiple rounds, hitting him,” Sheriff Ken Mascara told our news partners at WPTV. “He was declared dead when he arrived at the hospital.
Authorities say the teen who was identified as Vontreaz Banner by his mother, had been staying at his grandmother’s home and was a student at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy.
While not much is known about the shooting at this time, authorities say they believe Banner may have been targeted:
“This an isolated incident,” Mascara said. “We think he was targeted for whatever reason.”
Officials are still searching for the gunman.
