The Tampa Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their officers, killed early Tuesday morning in a wrong-way crash on I-275.

45-year-old officer Jesse Madsen who has been an TPD officer for over 16 years died after responding to the call of a wrong-way driver just after 1 a.m.

Police Chief Brian Dugan said a wrong-way driver was a 25-year-old man who has not been identified yet. He was speeding and swerving in and out of lanes, according to officials. Officer Madsen responded to the incident after multiple calls reported the driver.

“This is a tragedy,” Dugan said. “Our community has been rocked by these wrong-way drivers, and it’s just a complete tragedy that a husband and a father of four is now gone.”
