The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that they have arrested a 51-year-old childcare worker after she purposely caused serious injuries to a child left in her care.

Officials say Yamirka Menendez was taken into custody after a review of surveillance video at Time of Wonder Academy showed her swinging a 1-year-old child in the air before dropping him. She then hit the child in the head.

The child’s mother took the infant to an area hospital where the child was diagnosed with fractures in his leg. Medical staff at the hospital then informed that mother that her child’s injuries were consistent with child abuse, which prompted a review of the daycare facility.

Authorities say Menedez is facing additional charges for “forcibly” 4-month-old and slapping the child on the same day.

Another employee by the name of Milagros Rodriguez is also facing charges for failing to report child abuse.
