INDIAN RIVER COUNTY- Sheriff’s deputies and officials from Patrick Air Force base responded to reports of what appeared to be a ‘old military ordnance’ in the 1800 block of South A1A between Fort Pierce and Vero Beach.

The object was spotted on the beach by a person inspecting sea turtle nests Wednesday morning.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said on their Facebook page it was a ‘possible land mine’ and that technicians from Patrick had secured the item and removed it from the area.

Staff members from Patrick Air Force Base told WPTV the object may date back to the 1930s.

In April, mines were also found near a seawall on North Hutchinson Island.

No one was harmed in either incident.

Though many often prove to be inert training devices anything on the beach resembling a weapon should be treated as possible live ordnance.

Officials ask anyone who finds suspicious objects on the beach to immediately leave the area and call police.
