Suspected drunk driver crashes into patrol car in Port St. Lucie, officer safe

At approximately 2:16 a.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of SW Port St. Lucie Boulevard, an officer’s vehical was hit by a suspected drunk driver, WPTV reports.

The officers were conducting an unrelated DUI investigation when the incident occurred. The officer, who’s vehicle was struck, was unharmed.

The driver, a 27 year old man by the name of  Joseph Lara, was traveling at a high rate of speed in the right hand lane.

Officer Magura, who’s duty vehical was hit, was standing in the road and about to get into his vehicle when he observed the incoming car. Realizing that the suspect was not changing lanes or slowing down, Magura ran across SW Port St. Lucie Boulevard and was not harmed.

The police vehicle was struck on the driver’s side, taking out the side-view mirror.

Police then pursued Lara, pulled him over and conducted another DUI investigation. He was found guilty of driving under the influence and then arrested.

The PSLPD facebook page posted, “PSLPD is grateful that Officer Magura was able to narrowly escape this crash without injury. Thank you Officer Magura for your service and as a reminder to the community….Please do not drink and drive,”.
