Jacksonville, AL– A Jacksonville officer is recovering in the hospital after he was ran over by a driver while assisting another police department during a vehicle chase.
The incident began on Saturday, March 18 in Weaver, Alabama.
Authorities say a 22-year-old driver fled from a traffic stop in Weaver around 2:00 a.m. and the Weaver Police department gave chase.
The suspect managed to cross county lines into Jacksonville, where the Jacksonville police department took over.
Authorities caught up to the fleeing vehicle near the 5000 block of Alexandria-Jacksonville Highway, and that’s when the suspect turned his car around and rammed a Jacksonville squad car head-on before reversing.
The officer jumped out of his vehicle and drew his weapon and that’s when the suspect drove at the officer and ran him over.
The suspect pulled back for a second time but was shot by another officer.
Both the injured officer and the suspect were taken to an area hospital.
The officer has since been discharged but the suspect “was transferred to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for additional care.”
Both the names of the officer and the suspect have not been revealed.
