WINTER HAVEN, FL– A suspect wanted for questioning in a shooting that injured 11 people last month has died during a police pursuit.
21-year-old Alex Greene died Tuesday afternoon after he drove into a building while trying to evade police.
Investigators say they believe Greene was one of the suspects who was inside of a vehicle that drove through a neighborhood on Jan. 30th and opened fire on a crowd of people from all four windows.
Two people were critically injured and eight others were left with non-life-threatening wounds.
Authorities sought to bring Greene in on an outstanding warrant for burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary when Greene noticed them surveilling the area.
Greene got into a truck and fled from the police.
Officials followed Greene for an extended period of time until they realized he was headed toward an area with heavy traffic.
An officer in an unmarked vehicle conducted a pit maneuver to stop Greene from entering the busy road.
The officer was successful, but Greene got out of the vehicle and began running on foot.
Greene ran to an area where a woman was standing in a parking lot with both the driver and the passenger doors open.
When the woman saw Greene running towards the vehicle, she attempted to close both doors but was pushed out of the way.
Greene then hopped into the vehicle and drove toward authorities.
An officer opened fire on the vehicle as Greene approached but Greene kept driving.
“The suspect takes off in her car, drives toward Capt. Harper, who shoots six times,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. “The car continues down a road, weaves through flower beds, and crashes into a building.”
Officials pulled Greene from the vehicle and started performing CPR.
He was then transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the state attorney’s office are handling the investigation into the Jan. 30th shooting.
Authorities are reporting that it was a “targeted attack.”
