West Palm Beach, FL– The suspect who was fatally shot in an officer-involved shooting at a condominium complex has been identified.
The deceased’s father identified him as 27-year-old John McKinizie Jr.
Multiple West Palm Beach Police units were dispatched to the Paradise Cove Condominiums around 3:22 p.m. Monday, after a resident called to report a burglary in progress at a neighboring unit.
When authorities arrived at the scene, they encountered McKinizie Jr. armed and not obeying orders:
“What they encountered was a man with a gun. This man had the gun he was coming towards the officers. Multiple officers repeatedly gave commands for the man to drop the gun. He did not. In fact, he actually moved aggressively toward the officers. That’s when the officers were forced to fire at the suspect,” West Palm Beach Police spokesperson Mike Jachles said.
Authorities performed CPR on McKinizie but he died at the scene.
According to reports from CBS12, there appeared to be a gun still in its holster at the scene.
Family members told reporters that McKinizie’s girlfriend lives at the complex and he was trying to get into her apartment.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation.
West Palm Beach Police and the State Attorney’s Office will also be conducting their own investigations.
