A Port St. Lucie school teacher was arrested on child abuse charges after allegedly hitting a student with a broom handle on April 19.

49 year old Cyntyche Darling Lundy was a teacher at Forest Grove Middle School near Fort Pierce and was fired in the wake of the incident.

Witnesses told police that Darling Lundy was using a broom in her classroom when the handle broke and a student attempted to take it.

Darling Lundy cut herself as she tried to retrieve the piece of broken handle.

Frustrated, she is alleged to have then thrown the handle at the child, missing them but breaking a computer monitor.

Police say she then chased down and tackled the child and hit them on the hand, arm and leg with the broken piece of handle.

Video of the incident was said to have been posted to Snapchat.

The St. Lucie County School District told our partners at WPTV “St. Lucie Public Schools is aware of serious allegations against a teacher. The school district is working closely with our local law enforcement partners. The alleged behavior is intolerable and reprehensible.”

Darling Lundy was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on Friday and bonded out later that day.

The investigation is ongoing.
