(MARTIN COUNTY, FL)– The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that the skeletal remains of six bodies were discovered on Hutchinson Island following Hurricane Nicole.
Authorities believe the remains may have been from a Native American burial ground located in the same area.
Nicole made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane just south of Vero Beach early Thursday morning.
As of Thursday afternoon, only six skeletons have been discovered, however, there is the possibility that more graves may have been disturbed.
Martin County crime scene technicians remain on the scene at Chastain Beach.
The discovered bodies are being moved to the Medical Examiner’s Office, where they will then be sent to the Bureau Archeological Research Department of State.
“Detectives are working diligently to preserve and carefully remove the remains with the utmost care and respect,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook. “Those remains will be transferred to Gainesville for age testing then moved through a careful process of relocation.”
