Update: The suspect accused of stealing a vehicle with a 2-year-old girl inside has been arrested after a police tip.
Fort Lauderdale Police are currently searching for a suspect who stole a vehicle with a 2-year-old child inside and then abandoned the vehicle after crashing.
The incident was reported on Monday at the Chevron station at 1095 W. Sunrise Blvd.
According to the report, the vehicle’s owner left the child in the car while she quickly ran into the gas station. That’s when the suspect jumped into the car and began driving away.
The mother noticed the incident as it occurred and ran out of the gas station and jumped on the hood of the car.
The woman who did not want to be identified, told reporters that while on the hood of the car, she told the suspect that her child was inside but the suspect still continued driving.
The mother then got off of the vehicle and began chasing the vehicle down.
Eventually she found a good Samaritan who gave her a ride to chase down the stolen vehicle and she called police.
The good Samaritan and the mother followed the vehicle to a nearby residential neighborhood where the suspect eventually crashed into a row of trashcans before the vehicle came to a rest on a swale along the 1700 block of Northwest Third Court.
The suspect then took off, leaving the vehicle and the child behind.
One person was questioned near the scene, however, officials released him after determining he was the suspect.
