Ryan Newman ‘awake’ following major car crash at Daytona 500

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman is “awake” at the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, following a finish-line crash at the Daytona 500, Roush Fenway Racing said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

The update from Roush Fenway Racing is the first update since last night saying that Newman was hospitalized, and in serious condition.

The statement confirmed that Newman was able to speak with doctors and his family.

Before the horrific crash, Newman approached the finish line of the Daytona 500 on Monday, and was expected to win his first Daytona 500 in 12 years.
