A psychiatric patient who reportedly escaped from Kendall Regional hospital was reportedly struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the road.
The incident was reported just before 4 p.m. on Monday.
According to the report, the 20-year-old patient “became violent with the hospital staff and attempts to escape,” Miami-Dade Police detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.
An off-duty police officer who was visiting someone at the hospital then stepped in to help after staff asked him to.
“The officer then engages, the individual becomes violent with the officer, there’s a struggle that ensues, and that’s when he continues to get away,” said Zabaleta.
The man then took off from the hospital and crossed Bird Road. He then reportedly approached the exit ramp toward the Turnpike and ran toward the southbound lanes where he was struck by a truck.
Video from the scene appears to show officers chasing the patient in his hospital gown.
The patient was transported to an area hospital where his condition is unknown at this time.
