The Carters are the longest-married presidential couple in history.
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are celebrating 75 years of marital bliss.
The union spans decades of public service from rural Georgia to the White House.
“The best thing I ever did was marrying Rosalynn,” he said.
The oldest-living American president said there are only two secrets to a long and successful marriage: “First of all, choose the right person to marry,” Carter told ABC’s “Good Morning America” Monday. “And every night, try to make sure we’re completely reconciled from all the arguments during the day.”
When Jimmy was a US Naval Academy student he proposed to then Rosalynn Smith, she rejected him because of a promise she made at 13 to her dying father that she would finish college before she got married.
She kept her promise and decided to marry after she graduated from Georgia Southwestern College.
“#75YearsAgo today these two kids tied the knot and forged a bond that cannot be broken,” the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library said in a tweet.

The couple touched on the secrets to a happy marriage in an exclusive interview with “Good Morning America” earlier this week.
The couple believes in reading the bible together every night for the last 60 years to keep them grounded and in tune with each other.
Even if they are in different cities, they still read it together.
This is truly a huge milestone for the couple, they will continue to be stellar role models for anyone striving to get married and stay married.
