Fort Myers, FL– Authorities are reporting that a woman’s body that was discovered in the mangroves on Fort Meyers beach is a woman who was reported missing after Hurricane Ian.
The remains of 82-year-old Ilonka Knes were discovered by a debris removal company on Tuesday.
The Lee County Sheriff’s office told reporters during a press conference that they were able to identify Knes through dental records.
Officials were asked to conduct a welfare check on October 7, several days after Hurricane Ian struck the area.
While authorities went to the home and searched the area, they were unable to locate Knes.
She was eventually listed as a missing person on Oct. 15th.
Neighbors told reporters that Knes lived not too far away from where her body was found.
