A convicted rapist from Connecticut has been located in Florida after being on the run for more than 40 years.
76-year-old Douglas Bennett was arrested at his home in Clearwater, Florida on Wednesday.
Authorities say they began investigating Bennett after he submitted an application for a passport in July of 2016 using the personal information of someone who was born in 1940 and died in 1945. The emergency contact information on the form eventually led investigators to Bennett’s true identity, which was confirmed after he was finger printed during his arrest.
Bennett was originally convicted of robbery, kidnapping, sexual contact, rape and deviate sexual intercourse in 1975. He was then sentenced to 18 years behind bars but remained free on bail while he attempted to appeal the conviction. According to the report, Bennett worked for the victim’s father and alleged that the victim’s father owed him money. When Bennett lost his appeal in 1976, he never turned himself in and in 1977 assumed the fraudulent identity.
He now faces up to 12 years in federal prison in Florida for passport fraud. A warrant for his arrest remains active in Connecticut.
