HAINES CITY, FL– A police officer is recovering after he was reportedly shot during a traffic stop.

The incident occurred just after 8:30 p.m. on Sunday near Glen Este Boulevard and Highway 27.

Authorities say Officer Dwight Rogers noticed a vehicle driving erratically and pulled the driver over.

During the traffic stop, the driver Luis Alicea Feliciano refused to give Officer Rogers his driver’s license and insurance information.

The officer asked Feliciano to get out of the vehicle and Feliciano refused to do that as well.

Officer Rogers then physically removed Feliciano from the vehicle and placed him under arrest.

The officer then noticed that the vehicle was registered to Feliciano’s girlfriend and due to a seized tag, the officer began the process of getting the vehicle towed.

Feliciano reportedly told the officer that he had fresh meats and groceries in the vehicle and that’s when the officer allowed Feliciano to call his girlfriend Daribel Torres Orozco to pick up the food.

According to the report, Daribel arrived at the scene with her brother David Torres Orozco, and they both began “acting aggressively” and questioning Officer Rogers and his backup.

The officers asked the brother and sister to leave and when they didn’t David was told he was under arrest.

David immediately began fighting Officer Rogers and managed to get his finger into the officer’s gun holster.

David then fired the weapon, shooting Officer Rogers in the leg.

Officer Rogers was taken to an area hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.

David Torres Orozco was taken into custody and charged with resisting an officer with violence, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and attempted felony murder with a weapon.

Both Daribel Torres Orozco and Feliciano are facing charges of resisting arrest without violence.
