PBSO: Teen Dies After Car Hits Bicycle Towing Grocery Cart

A 17-year-old boy who was riding in a shopping cart being pulled by a bicycle that crashed last month has died, authorities announced Wednesday.

Shamal Alezie died last Saturday at St. Mary’s Medical Center, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash took place at around 9 p.m. June 30 in the 8400 block of Belvedere Rd, near the South Florida Fairgrounds. Alezie lived a few blocks away from the scene.

According to PBSO’s report, Alezie was riding in a cart that was attached by a plastic grocery bag to a bicycle. A 16-year-old boy was pedaling the bicycle.

The report goes on to say that 28-year-old Alvardo Nathan Bauld, of West Palm Beach, was driving a 2007 Mitsubishi Gallardo east on Belvedere Rd, when the bike-cart crossed the road’s three lanes.

The impact of the separated the bike and the cart, and sent Alezie onto the car’s hood and windshield.

Bauld and the 16-year-old were not hurt, the report states. It adds that Bauld was wearing a seat belt, and it did not list alcohol as a possible factor in the crash.
