Sgt. 1st Class Michael J. Goble 33, of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, died Dec. 22, 2019, of injuries sustained during combat operations in Kunduz province, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Goble was a senior intelligence sergeant assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor device, the Valorous Unit Award, the Special Forces Tab, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Basic Airborne and Military Free Fall Jumpmaster badges.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kirk Fuchigami 25, of Keaanu, Hawaii, died Nov. 20, 2019, in a helicopter crash while providing security for troops on the ground in Afghanistan’s Logar province. Also killed in the crash was Chief Warrant Officer 2 David Knadle. Both soldiers were assigned to 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division based out of Fort Hood in Texas. The Pentagon is investigating the incident.

Sgt. Nathan G. Irish 23, of Billings, Montana, died Oct. 27, 2019, at Camp Taji, Iraq, in a non-combat incident. The cause of death was not released and the incident is under investigation. He was assigned to the 25th Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, out of Fort Wainwright, Alaska. His awards included two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy W. Griffin 40, of Greenbrier, Tennessee, was killed Sept. 16, 2019, by small arms fire when his unit was engaged in combat operations in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Griffin was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Griffin was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Sgt. 1st Class Elis A. Barreto Ortiz 34, of Morovis, Puerto Rico, was killed Sept. 5, 2019, when a vehicle-borne improvised explosion device detonated near his vehicle in Kabul, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. He was assigned to the 82nd Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Sgt. 1st Class Dustin Ard 31, of Hyde Park, Utah, died Aug. 29, 2019, from wounds sustained during combat operations in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
Master Sgt. Luis F. Deleon-Figueroa 31, of Chicopee, Massachusetts, died Aug. 21, 2019, during combat operations in Faryab province, Afghanistan. Also killed in incident was Master Sgt. Jose J. Gonzalez, 35. Both were assigned to 7th Special Forces Group at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and both received posthumous promotions. DeLeon-Figueroa’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with valor device, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, the Iraq Campaign Medal with one Campaign Star and the NATO Medal.

Spc. Clayton James Horne 23, of Atlanta, Louisiana, died Aug. 17, 2019, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, as a result of wounds sustained in a non-combat related incident. Winn Parish Sheriff’s Office stated on their Facebook page that Horne died after he fell off a tower. He was assigned to the 351st Military Police Company, 160th Military Police Battalion, an Army Reserve unit out of Ocala, Florida.
Gunnery Sgt. Scott A. Koppenhafer 35, of Mancos, Colorado, Died August 11, 2019 after being engaged by enemy small arms fire while advising and accompanying Iraqi security forces on a planned operation in Ninewah province, Iraq, according to military officials. This incident is under investigation.
Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Slayton Saldana, 24, had been listed Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) following a July 17 non-combat, man overboard incident while underway onboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) in the Arabian Sea. The incident is under investigation. Saldana was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5, part of Carrier Air Wing 7, assigned to the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group.

Johnston was was assigned to the 79th Ordnance Battalion, 71st Ordnance Group at Fort Hood, Texas. Johnston enlisted in 2013 and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

His awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, one of which has a “C” device for combat, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal. Collette was assigned to the 242nd Ordnance Battalion, 71st Explosive Ordnance Group. It was Collette’s first deployment. Collette was a recipient of the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Badge and the Senior Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge.
