19, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, died Dec. 13, 2018, in a non-combat incident at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. He was assigned to 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. The incident is under investigation.


Sgt. Jason Mitchell McClary
Died December 2, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
24, of Export, Pennsylvania, died Dec. 3 of wounds suffered in a Nov. 27 improvised explosive device attack in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. Capt. Andrew Patrick Ross, Sgt. 1st Class Eric Michael Emond and Staff Sgt. Dylan Elchin were also killed in the same incident. McClary was an infantryman assigned to 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Died November 27, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
25, of Hookstown, Pennsylvania, died Nov. 27 by an improvised explosive device in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. Capt. Andrew Patrick Ross, Sgt. 1st Class Eric Michael Emond and Sgt. Jason Mitchell McClary also died in the same incident. Elchin was assigned to the 26th Special Tactics Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico.

Died November 27, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
39, of Brush Prairie, Washington, died Nov. 27 by an improvised explosive device. Capt. Andrew Patrick Ross, Staff Sgt. Dylan Elchin and Sgt. Jason Mitchell McClary also died in the incident. Emond was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

29, of Lexington, Virginia, died Nov. 27 from an improvised explosive device in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. Three other service members, Sgt. 1st Class Eric Michael Emond, Staff Sgt. Dylan Elchin and Sgt. Jason Mitchell McClary also died in the same incident. Ross was assigned to 1st Battalon, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Died November 24, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
25, of Leavenworth, Washington, died Nov. 24 from wounds sustained from small arms fire while conducting combat operations in Khash Rod district, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Jasso was a team leader assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.


Maj. Brent Taylor
Died November 3, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
39, of North Ogden, Utah, died Nov. 3 from wounds sustained following an insider attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Taylor was a military intelligence officer with the Utah National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters and was serving with the Special Operations Joint Task Force.


Sgt. James Slape
Died October 4, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
23, of Morehead City, North Carolina, died Oct. 4 of from wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Slape was assigned to the 430th Explosive Ordnance Company, 60th Troop Command, of the North Carolina Army National Guard. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.


Staff Sgt. Diobanjo Sanagustin
Died September 4, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
32, of National City, California, died Sept. 4 in a non-combat related incident in Afghanistan. Sanagustin was assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Died September 3, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
42, of Thonton, W.Va., died Sept. 3 of wounds sustained from small arms fire following an insider attack in Logar province, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Bolyard was deployed with 3rd Squadron, 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Died August 20, 2018 Serving During Operation Inherent Resolve
34, of Spokane, Washington, died Aug. 20 as a result of injuries sustained when his helicopter crashed in Sinjar, Iraq. Galvin was assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

36, died Aug. 12 from wounded suffered in an improvised explosive device attack in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Transfiguracion was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

32, of Summerville, South Carolina, died July 12 of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire while conducting operations in support of a medical evacuation landing zone in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Celiz was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.

Died July 12, 2018 Serving During Operation Inherent Resolve
26, of Waterford, Connecticut, died July 12 at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, from injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident at Al Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates. Grotjan was assigned to the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina.

Died July 7, 2018 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel
20, of South Gate, California, died July 7 of an apparent insider attack in the Tarin Kowt district of Uruzgan province, Afghanistan. Two other soldiers were wounded in the attack, which is under investigation. Maciel was an infantryman assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, at Fort Benning, Georgia.


Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Matthew I. Holzemer
Died June 17, 2018 Serving During U.S. Africa Command Operations
35 , of Tennessee, died June 17 at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, due to a non-combat related incident. The death is under investigation. Holzemer was deployed to Djibouti in support of Special Operations Command Forward – East Africa. His awards include a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and Humanitarian Service Medal, among others.

26, of Chandler, Arizona, died June 8 in Somalia of injuries sustained from enemy indirect fire. The incident is under investigation. Conrad was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

36, of Austin, Texas, died March 30 in Manbij, Syria as a result of injuries when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near his patrol. Dunbar was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Ft Bragg, North Carolina.

21, of Vail, Arizona, died Jan. 6, 2018, at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo. The cause of death was under investigation. Jones was a military police working dog handler assigned to the 131st Military Working Dog Detachment, 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade. Jones’ award and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Robbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal (Kosovo) and German Marksmanship Badge.
