A death investigation is underway at the Martin County Jail, after officials there discovered a dead inmate in a cell on Thursday.

According to a report from WPEC-TV, it appears that 58-year-old Joseph Lessard hanged himself at some point before 9 a.m.

That’s when a corrections deputy found the body.

Lessard was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Records indicate that he was in jail since July for use or possession of drugs.

No other details were immediately available.
