An official in New Mexico is currently facing charges after he was allegedly caught secretly recording a child undressing.
38-year-old Chandler Kahawai of the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department is facing four counts of voyeurism involving a child after the discovery was made.
Authorities began investigating Kahawai after the child told school officials in October that Kahawai had touched her inappropriately. After an interview with the child, officials say they became concerned that Kahawai might have been grooming the child “for future sexual abuse.”
During their investigation of Kahawai, the child’s mother told police that she found a hidden camera in her home. When authorities checked the camera’s memory source, they found several images of the child undressing and using the bathroom.
Officials then question Kahawai about the camera equipment to which Kahawai admitted to purchasing and hiding the camera. He told investigators that he only intended to spy on the girl because he was concerned that she was harming herself.
After receiving a warrant to search Kahawai’s digital devices, they found which contained memory card contained 35 videos. They also found videos of the child on Kahawai’s cellphone.
Kahawai eventually told investigators that he believed what he did was wrong and he was attracted to the girl and also admitted to viewing the videos multiple times.
A spokeswoman for the Indian Affairs Department told reporters in an email that Kahawai has been suspended following the allegations:
“The allegations disclosed today are shocking and troubling,” Sherrie Catanach wrote in an email. “The employee in question was immediately placed on administrative leave; should the facts and outcome warrant, they will be disciplined appropriately, including possible termination.”
Authorities say the investigation is on going and that there may be more charges filed.
