Videos, websites, and social media posts have been popping up making the false claim that Americans will owe the money on next year’s taxes

“This is not an advance and there is absolutely no obligation to pay it back,” Treasury spokeswoman Patricia McLaughlin told the Associated Press.

Those whose banking records are on file with the IRS will see the funds direct deposited into their accounts starting this week, while others will receive a paper check at a later date.
