(PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLA) — Hurricane Nicole has been downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall near Vero Beach over night.
The storm came ashore as a Category One hurricane around 3:00 am with a 50-mile-wide eye, causing damage and power outages. FPL reports that Palm Beach County has 8000 without power, and Martin County 4500.
Since the winds have died down, crews will be able to begin restoring power at sunrise. The National Hurricane Center says the tropical storm still has strong winds up to 60 miles per hour, and is south of Orlando.
Nicole is expected to enter the Gulf around one this afternoon and remain a tropical storm. Disney World and Universal Orlando are shutting down today as Nicole moves northward toward Georgia and the Carolinas.
Tropical Storm warnings are in effect from Boca Raton to South Carolina.
PBIA airport closed yesterday at 9:00 am and flights this morning are already cancelled.
