Starting tomorrow, some residents in New Jersey will be able to enjoy marijuana recreationally.
The change comes one day short of what some consider a national pot smoker’s holiday.
Spokeswoman Toni-Anne Blake for the Cannabis Regulatory Commission says the date of 4/21 was selected on purpose:
“Selecting 4/20 for opening day would have presented unmanageable logistical challenges for patients and other buyers, surrounding communities, and for municipalities,” said Blake.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy promised to legalize recreational marijuana within the first 100 days of being in office, however, he faced several legislative obstacles.
After three years of failed legislative attempts and tax negotiations, Murphy was finally able to sign the bill into law.
New Jersey will become one of 18 states that have legalized recreational cannabis.
Residents 21 and older will be able to purchase up to 6 ounces of cannabis without a medical marijuana card.
Seven facilities that already sell medical marijuana have been selected by state regulators to also sell the product recreationally.
