Ocala, FL– A Florida woman who fatally shot her neighbor during a confrontation through the door has been arrested.
58-year-old Susan Louise Lorincz was taken into custody Tuesday on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault for the death of Ajike Owens.
Authorities say the women who had a long history of going back and forth, got into it on Friday after Lorincz yelled at Owens children and reportedly threw a pair of skates that hit one of them, while they were playing in a field near the apartments.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Owens’ family also reported that Lorincz had been yelling racial slurs at the children, though police have not confirmed that statement.
When Owens heard what happened, she went over to Lorincz’s apartment with her 9-year-old son to confront her.
Authorities say Owens began banging on the door and the women got into an argument. As the argument continued, Lorincz fired through the door, striking Owens.
Lorincz then called the police and reported a trespasser.
When authorities arrived they found Owens suffering from a gunshot wound and rushed her to a hospital where she later died.
Lorincz claimed she was scared for her life so she shot through the door to protect herself.
Officials initially declined to take Lorincz into custody as they investigated her stand your ground defense.
After speaking with other witnesses, officials determined that Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida law.
The case is still under investigation.
