The owner of a gas station in North Carolina says he will start taking extra precautions after nearly 400 gallons of gas was stolen from his gas station this week.
Hardik Patel told reporters that surveillance video shows a vehicle pull up to one of the pumps after hours.
A person then got out of the vehicle and used some sort of tool to bypass the payment system and started pumping gas without paying.
Patel says the situation did not end there.
More than 15 cars pulled up to the pumps at the Bizzy Bee Grocery Store and Gas Station in High Point, and began filling their tanks with gas.
According to the report, the incident occurred over the course of 45 minutes and costed the gas station $1,600.
“I’ve been in business for 15 years and owned other gas stations. I have never seen something like this,” Patel told CNN. “It wasn’t free, they were stealing.”
Authorities were alerted to the scene after several people noticed the vehicles at the gas station after hours.
So far no arrest have been made.
The incident comes as the national average for gas has reached $4.33 a gallon.
Patel says he will now start shutting off the power to the pumps when he goes home for the day.
He also reported that if that method does not work he will consider shutting down the business.
“If I lose more than I make, there might be some things to think about,” he said.
