(MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL)– Authorities in northwest Miami-Dade are reporting that a woman who was found naked and on drugs, reportedly set fire to a man’s apartment who normally helped her out.
The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of Northwest 63rd Street.
The victim told authorities that the suspect, Maria Dawson, lives on the streets but he allowed her to take showers at his home.
On the day of the fire, the victim says he noticed Dawson at his home but did not talk to her or follow her because he was in the middle of cooking.
The victim later began to smell smoke coming from another area of the home and went to check it out.
The victim found heavy smoke coming from his bedroom and the door to the bedroom locked.
After several tries the man eventually broke into the bedroom to find a pile of clothes in the closet on fire and tried unsuccessfully to put it out with a water hose.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire but not before it caused significant damage to the unit.
Police were able to locate Dawson in the area a short time later after responding to reports of a naked woman.
Authorities say Dawson “had an altered state of mind due to heavy drug use and (claimed) she had not slept in 17 days.”
She has been taken into custody on arson and attempted murder charges.
