North Miami, FL– The 24-year-old mother who admitted to fatally stabbing her three-year-old daughter is now facing new charges.
Miami-Dade prosecutors filed paperwork on Tuesday stating that in addition to the second-degree murder charge, Jellisa Baxter will also face a charge of felony aggravated child abuse.
Authorities say Baxter fatally stabbed her three-year-old daughter and then contacted the police.
According to the 911 operator, Baxter said she attempted to strangle her daughter at first but when that did not kill her, she stabbed her.
Officials found the child with deep stab wounds to the chest and say that the knife was left near the body.
Neighbors told reporters that Baxter was struggling to get by.
Public records show that Baxter was unemployed and received an eviction notice just a few days before the murder.
Baxter remains in police custody without bond.
