Mother of rescued Surfside teen dies at hospital

The mother of the 15-year-old boy who was videoed being rescued after the Surfside building collapse, has been identified as the first victim of the tragic incident to be identified.

According to the report, 54-year-old Stacie Fang died moments after arriving at Aventura Hospital on Thursday.

The family has since released statement expressing their appreciation for the public’s support but also asking for their privacy as they start their process of healing:

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Stacie,” the family said in a statement. “The members of the Fang and Handler family would like to express our deepest appreciation for the outpouring of sympathy, compassion and support we have received. The many heartfelt words of encouragement and love have served as a much needed source of strength during this devastating time. On behalf of Stacie’s son, Jonah, we ask you now to please respect our privacy to grieve and to try to help each other heal.”

The teen Jonah Handler, is currently in the hospital recovering from the incident. His condition is unknown, however, several reports indicate the teen may have several broken bones.

At least four people have been pronounced dead, while 159 people are said to be missing.  Search and rescue efforts continue.
