A 20-year-old mother and her 4-month-old son have died after the woman’s sister attempted to beat a moving train.

The incident was reported on Thursday afternoon in Lakeland, Florida.

Officials say 26-year-old Kayla Cobb decided to drive the vehicle around downed crossing arms as an Amtrak train approached the area. The vehicle was then immediately struck.

The impact of the collision split the vehicle in two, sending the back- half where Shala Cobb and her infant were sitting, 50 feet away from the scene.

Investigators say Shala died at the scene while her son Kingston was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

Kayla was said to have been stuck inside of the from portion of the vehicle with a leg injury and was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officials reported that though they found a car seat in the vehicle, none of the occupants appeared to have been wearing their seatbelts.

Authorities also reported that no-one on the train was injured.
