Mississippi has approved a new state flag with a magnolia and the phrase “In God We Trust” design.
Voters approved the flag to replace a Confederate-themed flag state lawmakers retired months ago due to the national outcry over continued racial injustice.
The magnolia flag was the only design on the general election ballot, and voters were asked to say yes or no. 68% of people voted yes according to reports.
Legislators will have to put the design into law, and they are expected to do it right away because they already retired the Confederate-themed flag since June. The Confederate-themed flag was retired because it has been used by Ku Klux Klan groups and is widely condemned as racist.
The new Mississippi flag was designed by Rocky Vaughan.
