Middle school student fatally shot by classmate

Officials in North Carolina are reporting that a 12-year-old middle school student was fatally shot by one of their classmates.

The incident was reported on Thursday around 12:30 p.m. at Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville County.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office reported that they received a call from the school’s resource officer requesting emergency backup, after they heard gunshots inside the school.

They later learned that a 12-year-old student shot another student before fleeing from the school grounds.

Authorities later found the suspect hiding under a deck at at nearby home.

The gun was also retrieved at the scene.

Both students were described as 12-year-old boys who reportedly knew each other.

It is unclear at this time why the shooting occurred or how the student came in possession of the gun.

The suspect has been transported to a juvenile justice center in Columbia, South Carolina.

He is facing several charges including murder, possession of a firearm on school property and unlawful possession of a weapon by a person under the age of 18.

No other injuries were reported.
