MIAMI, FL–
A Miami-Dade Police officer is in critical condition following an armed robbery in Liberty City Monday night.
Officials say they spotted the vehicle believed to be involved in the robbery and began pursuing it.
A vehicle chase ensued, but authorities were able to surround the vehicle near the intersection of Northwest 62nd Street and 17th Avenue.
After an altercation, both police and the suspect began exchanging gunfire.
The suspect was fatally shot and died at the scene.
One officer was taken to an area hospital where they are said to be in critical condition.
Police Chief Alfredo Ramirez is calling for the community to “stand as one” as an investigation into the situation continues.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the case.
