(MIAMI)- A Miami-Dade police officer who was shot in the line of duty has succumbed to wounds according to MDPD Director Freddy Ramirez.
“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of Officer Cesar “Echy” Echaverry,” Ramirez said in a statement published on Twitter. “Surrounded by loved ones, Echy succumbed to his injuries after a brief battle for his life.”
On Monday, the 29 year old member of the department’s Robbery Intervention Detail was attempting to stop a fleeing suspect in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood when gunfire erupted in the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and 62nd Street.
Echaverry was shot in the head by the suspect who himself was killed when officers returned fire.
Fellow officers transported Detective Echaverry to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he remained in critical condition before dying from his injuries on Wednesday evening.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a statement: “I am heartbroken to learn of Detective Cesar Echaverry’s death. He laid down his life to stop a violent criminal, and we will be forever grateful for his selfless service and sacrifice to our community.”
A considerable police presence was seen at Jackson Memorial on Wednesday evening as his family and colleagues prepare to make final arrangements for him.
Det. Echaverry was a 5 year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department.
