TAMPA- A judge here has ordered the woman police say was drunk when she crashed through barricades on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, threatening the lives of runners participating in a race, to undergo a competency exam ahead of her upcoming trial.
In March, Florida Highway Patrol say Kristen Watts of Sarasota broke through barriers put up to protect participants in the Sunshine Skyway Bridge 10K and was heading towards them when a state trooper swerved into Watts’ path with her patrol vehicle to stop her.
The dramatic head-on crash was caught on Trooper Toni Schuck’s dashcam.
Watts showed signs of intoxication at the time of her arrest and later that morning was shown to have had a blood alcohol content of 0.271, well above Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.
Her attorneys say she didn’t intend to harm anyone and that she didn’t know there was a race happening that day.
The hearing is set for June 1.
