A Colorado couple are publicly sharing their story after they say they found out that they were related to each other ten years into their marriage.
Realtor Celina Quinones posted a TikTok about the unexpected find in March.
Despite being married since 2006 and attending several family functions together, the couple says they found out that they were related after trying to put together a family tree.
According to the report, the couple sent in their DNA and it came back that they are cousins.
“I ordered the DNA tests,” said Celina. “They came in, and sure enough, we did our swabs, put them in the mail, and off they went. Then, we got the results back, and I searched the family tree DNA and saw him pop up there, and I go, ‘Oh no.,” Celina told PEOPLE.
Celina says the test did not say exactly how closely they were related but said they are between second to seventh cousins.
According to reports, that would mean the closest relative between them would potentially be a great-grandparent.
While the find did take a toll on their relationship, the Quinones’ eventually decided that after 10 years of marriage and three healthy children, they would stick it out.
“I started rethinking, and then, after a while, I was like, ‘Nope, we’re just staying together,'” she told PEOPLE. “There’s nothing we can do about it. I’m not going to let some blood come between us.”
Celina says they paused the research into their ancestry after the discovery but plan to one day dive deeper into it.
